Night Science Institute Newsletter

Championing a cultural shift in science by training researchers to embrace the creative process.

What to expect from the Night Science Train-the-Trainer Summit

Dear Colleague,

What if you could teach the Night Science workshop on the Creative Scientific Process? That's the premise behind the Night Science Train-the-Trainer Summit, a one-day intensive coming to New York this April, led by Itai Yanai and Martin Lercher.

The Train-the-Trainer Summit aims to equip scientists and educators with everything they need to bring creativity training back to their own institutions.

So what will attendees actually walk away with?

The day begins with a grounding in the Night Science philosophy: the powerful interplay between the imaginative, exploratory mode of generating hypotheses ("Night Science") and the rigorous process of testing them ("Day Science").

From there, participants will learn how to lead the workshop session firsthand, learning the structure, pacing, and facilitation techniques that make these sessions work.

The heart of the program is a deep dive into the thinking tools that experienced scientists use — often without realizing it — to spark creative breakthroughs. These include techniques for harnessing the metaphorical language of discovery, reframing scientific questions, navigating the back-and-forth between data and ideas, embracing contradictions as catalysts rather than obstacles, and recognizing when to "switch puzzles" in an ongoing research project.

Unlock the Creative Side of Science: Night Science Train-the-Trainer Summit Comes to New York

April 24, 2026 | New York Academy of Sciences, New York City

  • Arrival & Breakfast (8:30-9:00)

  • Part 1 (9:00-10:00) An overview of the creative scientific process and the Night Science initiative

  • BREAK (10:00-10:30) Ice-breaker with coffee

  • Part 2 (10:30-12:00) Leading a Night Science session

  • Lunch (12:00-13:00)

  • Part 3 (13:00-15:30 with a 15 minute BREAK) Six additional thinking tools covered in the Night Science Workshop

  • Part 4 (15:30-17:00) Personalizing and presenting the Night Science content

  • Reception (17:00-18:00)

Participants will also explore how crossing disciplinary boundaries can unlock fresh perspectives, a concept the program calls "Renaissance minds."

But the Summit isn't just about absorbing content. The final session is dedicated to making it personal. Attendees will develop their own version of the Night Science material — weaving in anecdotes and examples from their own fields — so they leave ready to deliver a workshop that feels authentic to their community.

Every participant also receives the tools they need - slide decks with speaker notes, curated readings - and they'll join a growing network of trainers committed to making creativity a core part of scientific education.

For scientists and educators who believe discovery deserves as much attention as method, this is a rare opportunity to learn — and then teach — the art of creative science.
